For decades, rumors have circulated about a vast network of underground tunnels beneath our very feet. Some claim they stretch out across Pine Hollow, linking secret entrances all over town. But if you ask 3 different people, you’re likely to get 3 different answers for how they were used.
Most say that, if they do exist, they’re probably just abandoned copper mines from Pine Hollow’s brief mining boom in the 1800s. Others think they were built by bootleggers during prohibition to smuggle liquor across town. For my part, I think those snakes at the Masonic Lodge have something to do with it.
For a long time, the only real piece of evidence for the existence of these tunnels was an old map of Pine Hollow with symbols that seemed to indicate some sort of underground passage. But no other maps of the town, historical or otherwise, showed the same. Most wrote it off as either a bad prank or some old plan that was never carried out.
But that all changed in the 1970s when they started building the Turtle Cove Mall. I was still in high school at the time, and I remember rumors about those tunnels spread across town like wildfire. Allegedly, when the construction crew started digging the foundation, they unearthed an old passageway.
But that wasn’t the official story from the town. The powers that be claimed the crew actually dug up a sinkhole in the making. They said it was a miracle they discovered it when they did, or the town could have had a real tragedy on its hands.
Maybe that’s true, maybe it was just a big coincidence. But I don’t believe in coincidence. And if those tunnels do exist, someone is working hard to make sure they aren't explored. What are they hiding?
"I don't care what the official story is, there ARE tunnels under Pine Hollow. My dad was part of the construction team in the 70s. He says whatever they dug up, it wasn't no dang sinkhole. I trust my dad over some stuffy politician...even if he does have a drinking problem. I don't know why, but the town is covering up the truth. Someone knows something."
